INEC slams Bode George, denies appointing ex-Lagos commissioner as ICT head

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recently been caught up in a controversy after it was accused of appointing a former Commissioner in Lagos State, Femi Odubiyi, as the head of its Information and Communications Technology Department. However, INEC has vehemently denied these claims, calling them false and baseless.

In a statement released by the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, he stated that the claims made by former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Bode George, were entirely untrue. He clarified that INEC staff members were non-partisan and have never held any political positions in the past.

Okoye also mentioned that the name ‘Femi Odubiyi’ does not even exist within the ICT Department of the INEC headquarters in Abuja or any state office of the Commission. He reiterated that all ICT staff members were career officers of the Commission and that none of them had held any political appointment in any state of the Federation.

This controversy highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in government institutions. INEC, as an electoral body, plays a crucial role in ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria. It is, therefore, imperative that it maintains a high level of integrity and credibility in its operations.

It is not uncommon for political figures to make baseless accusations against government institutions, particularly during election seasons. However, it is essential for these institutions to remain impartial and non-partisan to ensure that their operations are not influenced by political considerations.
