The Ogun State Police Command has vowed to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the forthcoming local government elections in the state. The command has engaged political actors, religious bodies and other key stakeholders, to sign undertakings pledging to conduct themselves peacefully during the polls.
Speaking ahead of the elections, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, assured residents that the command had deployed adequate machinery to ensure free, fair, and credible conduct before, during, and after the elections.
Oyeyemi noted that the command had collaborated with sister agencies to ensure the safety of security agents, INEC officials, and the electorates. The police have put all necessary measures in place to prevent violence, thuggery, and any other form of electoral malpractice.
The police spokesperson further stated that the command had learned from past events that led to the loss of lives during elections. The command has taken necessary steps to ensure the safety of all parties involved in the election process.
Oyeyemi also stated that the police had additional personnel posted to them from different police formations, the Zonal headquarters, Force CID, and Force headquarters in Abuja. The tactical teams, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers have been put on their toes to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the polls.
He added that the electoral results were already on the server before the polling agents leave the polling units. Therefore, any attempt to ambush the electoral result would be futile as it would not affect the outcome of the election.
In conclusion, the Ogun State Police Command has put everything in place to ensure that people can cast their votes and return peacefully. The command has strengthened its level of preparedness to prevent a recurrence of the violence that occurred during past elections. The police urged everyone to conduct themselves peacefully during the forthcoming local government elections.
