Sixty-Five Per Cent Of North-East Technical College Teachers Are Untrained

The Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) under the Ministry of Education, has stated that 65 per cent of teachers in the Northeast Technical Colleges do not have conventional training while 35 per cent have technical training.

According to punchng.com, Dr. Tony Okwa, the Chairman of the Human Resource Strategy for Skills Development, IDEAS, disclosed this yesterday in Gombe State, during a sensitisation workshop for state and non-state actors for Technical and Vocational Education Teachers stakeholders in the northeast.

Okwa was represented Mr. Ejoga Inalegwu.

Out of 1,334 Technical College Teachers in Northeast, 1,088 were males and the rest 246 were females which is not acceptable if advancement is to be achieved in technical education and making relevance.

Inalegwu added that women need to be brought on board to acquire technical skills. Only 35 per cent of teachers in technical colleges are technical teachers, 65 per cent are for English, Mathematics, Biology and other subjects.

The workshop organised by the Ministry under IDEAS project with support from the World Bank.

He noted that Abia, Kano, Gombe, Edo, Ekiti and Benue are the participating states for IDEAS project.

Women should be encouraged to seek a career path in technical education as such disparity could affect women in getting technical education in the region.
