Two killed, banks burnt down as protest rocks Delta

Protests on Wednesday rocked the Udu road area of Delta State, resulting in the death of two persons and the burning of two commercial banks over naira scarcity.

DAILY POST gathered that protesters went on a rampage destroying and vandalizing First, Access, and Union commercial banks’ assets at the Express Junction, Udu road, Delta State. In a chat with DAILY POST, Mrs. Bredjor Okoro, an eyewitness, said two persons had been killed and several others injured due to the protest.

She informed the DAILY POST that angry protesters had burned down three banks. “Everywhere is on fire; First, Union and Access Banks buildings were burnt down by protesters over the naira crisis. At the moment, two people have been killed from trail bullets by Police officers deployed to contain the situation”, she stated.

APC kicks as police invite Fani-Kayode

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council says the police Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) has invited Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister, for questioning.

In a statement on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, the council’s media director, said the police invitation was extended to him on Tuesday. The secret police are currently grilling Fani-Kayode, the campaign council’s director of new media for tweeting that Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), met with army generals.

Onanuga said the council was not questioning the authority of the police, noting that the information they were seeking was already being pursued by the DSS. “Despite the well-publicized invitation of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode by the DSS and the report that the secret police asked him to return for further investigation today, we were surprised that the police have also jumped into the same matter,” he said.

Man jailed 7 years for snatching N6,500 phone

The Upper Area Court 4 in Yola, Adamawa State, has sentenced a 21-year-old man to seven years imprisonment for phone snatching. The sentence comes without an option of fine. The presiding judge of the court, Ibrahim Ulenda, convicted and sentenced the defendant, Abdulaziz Yusuf, who had pleaded guilty to the charge against him.

Abdulaziz Yusuf was earlier arraigned before the court by the Prosecutor, Sergent Kabiru Abubakar of the Nigeria Police after he was said to have forcefully collected a phone from a student. Facts on the matter indicate that he had earlier in the month, on February 3, stormed Doubeli Secondary School, located in Yola North Local Government Area and threatened a student, identified as Aliyu Isa, with a knife and snatched his handset ued at N6, 500.

The victim had raised an alarm which attracted other students who pursued and apprehended the convict while he was trying to escape from the school premises. He was later handed over to the nearby Double Divisional Police headquarters which investigated and charged him in court.

APC stakeholders fault Etiebet’s claim, declare support for Tinubu, Akpabio

Stakeholders from Abak five political bloc under the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district, have refuted claims made by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Atuekong Etiebet, that they had withdrawn their support for the aspiration of Bola Tinubu and Senator Akpabio.

It will be recalled that Etiebet, an APC stalwart, alleged that stakeholders from the region had reached a consensus not to support Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem because Akpabio had refused to step down for the candidacy of Abak-5. The stakeholders called on residents of the senatorial district to disregard Etiebet’s statement, describing it as self-serving and dead on arri.

Convener of the meeting and a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, in a communique signed with other stakeholders and made available to our correspondent in Uyo on Tuesday, disclosed that the meeting comprised of officials of the party from old Abak division; chairmen of the party in the five chapters; 55 ward chairmen; candidates of APC; and other relevant stakeholders from the old Abak division.
