FUTA alumnus offers scholarships to 50 students

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) recently received a generous contribution from one of its own alumni, Dr. Gbenga Owolabi. The manager of Engineering and Maintenance at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Retail, offered scholarships to a total of 50 students in the School of Physical Sciences at FUTA.

The scholarships were awarded to 27 students with the highest CGPA from the previous academic session, as well as 23 indigent students. The “brilliant students” in their 500-level received N50,000 each, while those in the 200-level to 400-level received N20,000 each. The “indigent students” category also received N20,000 each.

The scholarships were established with the intention of easing the financial burden of students, and providing them with a stipend to assist in paying their school fees. Dr. Owolabi also hopes to assist students with their final year projects, and provide them with some financial stability.

This marks the third edition of the scholarship program, with the first two editions having only benefitted physics students in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic sessions. In the previous editions, 8 and 17 students respectively received scholarships.

However, this latest edition of the scholarship program was expanded to include all departments within the School of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Owolabi has promised that the next edition will extend beyond the School of Physical Sciences to include sciences, engineering, and environmental sciences.

Dr. Owolabi emphasized the importance of not limiting oneself, and hopes that his contribution will serve as a source of encouragement for students. His goal is to create a ripple effect of generosity and support within the FUTA community, and to inspire future alumni to give back to the university in their own ways.
