Naira Swap: Stop Taking Your Old Money to Banks—Gov El-Rufai Tells Kaduna Residents

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has advised residents of the state, particularly traders, to stop taking the old naira notes to deposit in banks.

He told the people to continue their business transactions with the old notes, insisting that nobody can stop them from using the old notes even after the expiration of the February 10 deadline for the notes to cease to be legal tenders.

He also assured the residents of the state that none of them would lose their hard-earned money due to the naira redesign policy.

The governor said:

“Stop taking your money to banks because when you deposit nine naira only one naira will be given to you because the notes are scarce.

“The law says if you have old notes with you even if it takes 100 years and you take it to the central bank it will be accepted. So keep your money with you even if it will take you 100 years.”

Recall that yesterday, the Supreme Court gave an order restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from implementing the February 10 deadline in a suit jointly brought to it by El-Rufai and the governors of Zamfara and Kogi states.
