3 Tactical Blunders Erik ten Hag Committed Against Leeds United Last Night

Manchester United battled back from a 2-0 deficit to draw with Leeds, saving them from a catastrophic defeat.

Wilfried Gnonto beat David de Gea with a low strike to put United down after just 55 seconds at Old Trafford. Raphael Varane’s deflection of Crysencio Summerville’s low cross into his own goal gave the managerless visitors a second goal after the break.

Prior to Jadon Sancho scoring an equalizer to tie the game, Marcus Rashford headed in a cross from Diogo Dalot to cut the deficit in half. However, if Erik ten Hag had avoided the blunders listed below, it might have been more favorable for the Red Devils.

1. Starting Rashford out of position

There was no way Ten Hag should have switched Rashford from the left to the right wing given his current form.

Despite Alejandro Garnacho’s promising performance in his preferred position throughout the first 45 minutes, it’s difficult to deny that Marcus Rashford would have presented Leeds right-back Luke Ayling with greater difficulties.

After the break, the English player returned to his natural position and, to everyone’s surprise, scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season to bring United back into the match.

2. Not trusting Sancho

Ten Hag didn’t want to start Sancho, which dragged Rashford out of position, although that move would have benefited the team as a whole.

Sancho demonstrated what he was capable of just 11 minutes after coming off the bench to replace Wout Weghorst, who was essentially a ghost throughout his time on the field, despite the fact that he might not have been match sharp.

The Dutchman needs to prove that the 22-year-old has a management that supports him and believes in his ability to perform, therefore it’s about time he put his trust in him.

3. Bringing back Dalot

Without a question, Dalot is Ten Hag’s first choice for the right back position, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka has shown promise while Dalot has been sidelined with an injury since the World Cup.

It was a bad idea to put him back in the starting lineup right away, especially when he went up against the explosive Gnonto.

It would have been better to start with the more defensively sound Wan-Bissaka, and Dalot ought to have come off the bench.
