Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele resumed work in his office on Monday.
However, officers of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) also increased their presence in the building to provide additional security for him.
“Emefiele entered the facility in the afternoon, trailed by some DSS officers,” was reported to the nation.
Officially, he is constantly surrounded by at least two DSS agents, but a CBN source claimed that he was frequently surrounded by five agents.
The person further disclosed that some DSS officials had been spotted at the CBN Headquarters prior to his arri since it was rumored that the DSS intended to arrest him.
“The DSS officers didn’t intimidate anyone or break into the CBN. They’re not bothering you, the official told The Nation.
In a statement, Mr. Osita Nwanisiobi, Director of Corporate Communications for the CBN, said: “The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has rejoined duty following his yearly holiday overseas.
“Today, Monday, January 16, 2023, Mr. Emefiele, who had been on leave since December 2022, returned to work.
Prior to the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year, set for January 23–24, 2023, the Governor returned to his duties with renewed vigor.
“Mr. Emefiele is committed to carrying out the task at hand in accordance with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement continued.
To ensure a stable financial system and the overall health of the Nigerian economy, Nwanisiobi urged for Nigerians to “continue to support the Bank’s initiatives.”
