Public Varsities Must Collect Tuition Fees To Remain Relevant- Former LASU VC

Professor Olarewaju Fagbohun, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Lagos State University (LASU), has stated that public varsities must collect tuition fees to be relevant despite with no guarantee to their sustainability.

He noted this while delivering lecture at the 12th convocation ceremony of Fountain University, Oshogbo, titled ‘ The Nigerian University System: Between Public Hopes and Individual Expectations for the 21st Century’, as public varsities are ruined because of neglect.

According to punchng.com, the Professor of Environmental Law noted that public varsities charge reasonable fees because of the insincerity of gf government to education which cannot deliver good education.

truth is to be faced, the current regime whereby fees paid in public varsities are a significant far cry from what it is and can never sustain the system. This is the reason that most of the Nigerian public universities have become decrepit.

On good moral ground, the government cannot be defended of their sincerity seeing that resources are being waste daily. This is time for public universities to start charging reasonable fees that will allow them to be sustainable.

To start, the government has to inject more funds to stabilize the institutions.

Thereafter, annual grants will be looked into as is done with the World Bank Centers of Excellence.

Different tiers of government should also look into at bursaries and scholarships to supports indigent students while the federal government should revisit the loan scheme arrangement he added.
