Parents with learners who will be reporting to the Junior Secondary School (JSS) might end up paying extra fees. This comes as grade six learners proceed to the Junior Secondary Schools. According to reports, parents have been told to prepare themselves to pay school fees for the 1.2 million children who will be transiting to Grade Seven.
Further details indicate that there was a discussion on the school fees for the Junior Secondary Schools during a stakeholders meeting at the Kenyan Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi. However, the Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and Education PS Belio Kipsang are yet to comment on the question of school fees for the JSS.
At the same time, parents through the National Parents Association (NPA) have rejected school fees for junior secondary. NPA chairperson Silas Obuhatsa has said that parents should not pay school fees since William Ruto’s government had promised Kenyans free education. Obuhatsa said the roll out of Junior Secondary is happening at a time when Kenyans are grappling with the high cost of living and the government should therefore take up the responsibility and not push parents to paying fees.
“The issue of fees should not apply anywhere because JSS is domiciled within primary school premises. Children going to Grade 7 is like transiting from Class 6 to Class 7 in the 8-4-4 system. The government promised education will be free from pre-primary school to university. As parents, we are insisting that the government should be very careful with the issue of paying school fees for JSS learners. We shall not accept to pay school fees for JSS,” Mr Obuhatsa said.
