Less than two days ago, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) shocked Kenyans across the country after reporting that there is a high rate of gonorrhea infections among Nairobians.
After the news made headlines across various news sources, medics have moved quick to explain the real meaning of the word “Super Gonorrhea” and why it is very difficult to control.

As per the source, aside from calling it ‘super gonorrhea’ it can also be referred to as ‘gonorrhea superbug’
According to medics, Super Gonorrhea/ Gonorrhea superbag is an extensively drug-resistant gonorrhea with high-level resistance to the current recommended treatment.
Why gonorrhea is resisting treatment.
1) Selection and continuous use of antibiotics
2) Microorganisms responsible for causing Gonorrhea have undergone mutations (change in the DNA) and this making it difficult to kill them.
3) Unrestricted access to products that have the potential of killing or slowing the spread of microorganisms that cause the STI.
Dangers of Gonorrhea.
1) If left untreated, it exposes an individual to a high likelihood of contracting HIV and can also lead to infertility.
2) In women, it can lead to ectopic pregnancy (implantation of zygote outside the Uterus/womb), can cause maternal death, and premature abortion.
Treatment.
The best solution for this is abstinence. However, it can be treated by use of a combination of antibiotics due to emerging strains that have developed as a result of mutation.
