Amid the ongoing uproar that has greeted the viral video showing the moment a northern Islamic Scholar told his followers that they must support the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim ticket because it was a call to Jihad and that it shows how Islam is a dominant religion in Nigeria, reactions have begun trailing a rebuttal put forward by renowned northern socio-political activist and physician, Mahdi Shehu.
Taking to his Twitter handle on Sunday, January 8, 2022, Shehu accused the controversial scholar of preaching a message that was not part of Islam. According to him, not only is the Islamic religion about equity and justice, it is inequitable for anyone to attempt to justify the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in a religiously diverse country such as Nigeria.
He wrote; “This speech by the Islamic “scholar” does not represent the true teaching of Islam. Islam is equity, justice, fairness, and compassion. It is unjust, inequitable, and naive to justify a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a country where there is a significant presence of Christians.”
Quite interestingly, the remarks from Mahdi Shehu have drawn a flurry of reactions from Nigerians as they trooped to the comments section to share their thoughts.
While some persons agreed with the renowned activist on the extremity of the Islamic scholar’s message, others, however, accused him of holding similar views in the past.
