Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is a politician like no other having unsuccessfully run for the presidency five times. Each time taking second place (except the first attempt where he was third).
Indeed he has been too close yet too far from his lifelong dream with the closest being in 2022 where his archnemesis President William Ruto floored him with only 200,000 votes.
In a meeting with Mombasa leaders on January 6, the ODM leader expressed his resilience and determination by hinting that he will remain in active politics despite the August 9 loss.
He indirectly indicated that he is not yet tired and may pose a big threat to Ruto in the coming months as the country gears toward the 2027 polls.
“They are saying they want to take me to Bondo but I know the way to Bondo. If I wanted to go there I would gladly do so. But I do not need help from Ruto. Kenyans have said Baba should continue,” he told his supporters.
Such declarations and sentiments do not sit well with his longtime ally former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who is impatiently waiting for Raila to give him the batton to lead Azimio and become the official opposition leader.
Kalonzo also wants Raila to surrender his strongholds to him so that he may start campaigning for 2027. For the Wiper leader and his allies, any extra time Raila is spending on the political arena is an liability.
Kalonzo has supported Raila three of the five times he has vied for the top seat and twice as his running mate. But he now says nothing can stop him from going all the way to the ballot and that the 2027 election is his to lose.
