Former militant leaders from the Niger Delta region yesterday after a brainstorming session endorsed the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for the 2023 general election.
The endorsement of Atiku by the group was contained in a communique signed by Gen. Josiah Oyakonghan a.k.a Commander Oyimi, Chairman (MADND), Sokere Ekpos, Secretary General (MADND) and Freeborn Ochuko alias Pressure, PRO (MADND) in Warri, Delta State.
Members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Dreams of Niger Deltans (MADND) and former warlords of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) conducted the strategic meeting that resulted in the endorsement.
“In our meeting, held today, January 3, 2023, as an executive and members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Dreams of Niger Deltans (MADND) and Former Warlords of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), met to review the political situation in the nation generally and focused on the issues that predicated our previous agitations, such as resource control, restructuring the polity, political inclusivity, and economic justice, As we left the meeting, we determined that.
“Unanimously, we decided to fight for a President who has demonstrated commitment to these problems through his manifesto because regrettably there has been no tenable progress made to address our agitations.
“As a result of this, we, therefore, recommended the Peoples Democratic Party’s H.E. Atiku Abubakar for president, who had demonstrated greater receptivity to the needs and difficulties of Nigeria, particularly the Niger Delta region. Despite providing significant resources to Nigeria’s economy, this region has been ethically ignored and is still economically underdeveloped.
One of the criteria we used to decide to support Atiku Abubakar was that, out of all the presidential candidates, he was the first to choose a running mate in the form of H.E. Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, Governor of Delta State. Others struggled to choose a running mate and eventually submitted placeholders as running mates, a nomenclature that is nonexistent and foreign to the laws of our country.
And more significantly, it shows that they would be able to administer the country even if they were elected President because the last time they switched from placeholders to running mates, they were still having trouble implementing their manifestos.
