They were last seen drinking and having fun in a friend\u2019s shack. Residents of Site B in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, were shocked hours later when they saw flames consume the shack, killing friends Nolufefe Zongile (30), Mkhululi Tovana (45), Sinovuyo Chali (25), Eric Libalele (34) and Anitha Bhontsi (24).<\/p>\n

Siviwe Xhalanga (39) who lives in the same yard as Nolufefe said she last saw the group around 10 p.m. before going to bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were still drinking, and there were two candles lit in the shack.\u201d I\u2019m not sure what happened after that. I awoke after midnight to screams and some noise.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I realized the shack was on fire,\u201d Siviwe explained.<\/p>\n

Nangamso (33) Anitha\u2019s cousin, said she had been drinking with the deceased earlier in the day but decided to go home.<\/p>\n

She expressed shock that her lovely cousin died in such a manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy cousin was a very active young lady.\u201d She enjoyed making people laugh. \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened, and it\u2019s unfortunate that none of them survived to tell us,\u201d Nangamso said.<\/p>\n

Jermaine Carelse, a spokesman for the City of Cape Town\u2019s Fire and Rescue Service, said the service was notified at 1:50 a.m. that an informal structure in Bhemye Crescent was on fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, they discovered the bodies of five people who had died as a result of fatal burn wounds,\u201d Carelse said.<\/p>\n

After a shack caught fire on Friday, a police spokesman, Captain Frederick van Wyk, said an inquest case had been opened for investigation.<\/p>\n

Five people were killed by fire. The fire\u2019s origin is unknown. \u201cInvestigations are ongoing,\u201d Van Wyk said.<\/p>\n
