{"id":994234,"date":"2022-02-16T22:48:30","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T22:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/16\/ex-zimbabwe-footballer-killed-in-south-africa\/"},"modified":"2022-02-16T22:48:30","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T22:48:30","slug":"ex-zimbabwe-footballer-killed-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/16\/ex-zimbabwe-footballer-killed-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Zimbabwe footballer killed in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"387\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/murder-759-Copy-696x387.jpg\"   alt=\"murder hand chopped off\" title=\"murder dead-759 (Copy)\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Former Zimbabwe footballer, Charles Yohane has died in South Africa at the age of 48 in an apparent car-jacking incident.<\/p>\n<p>Defender Yohane was in the Warriors\u2019 squad for their debut appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Following retirement from playing he had been working in Johannesburg as a football coach and a taxi driver.<\/p>\n<p>His body was found in Soweto on Monday, though it is believed he died on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was hijacked, they took his car and shot him in the head,\u201d his brother Lewis told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n<p>Yohane moved from Zimbabwe to South Africa in 1996 and played for top-flight side Wits, becoming captain and making a club record 268 appearances from 1997 to 2006.<\/p>\n<p>He later became coach of the Wits\u2019 developmental side, but was released from his job when the club sold its franchise to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in 2020.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Charles-754x424.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"408\"\/><figcaption>\n<p>Charles Yohane made 23 appearances for Zimbabwe<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yohane played for Zimbabwe 23 times, quickly establishing himself as his country\u2019s first-choice left-back in 1996, when he was playing for Harare side CAPS United.<\/p>\n<p>His good friend Innocent Chikoya played with him at Fire Batteries FC and they moved together to African Wanderers in South Africa, with Yohane returning briefly to Zimbabwe in 1996 for his stint with Caps United.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t a friend, he was a brother, and we have lost him in bad circumstances,\u201d Chikoya told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was clever, an intelligent footballer, he had ways of getting things done. He was a leader, disciplined and dedicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be collecting his body from the funeral parlour on Thursday and will be taking him home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another South Africa-based Zimbabwean, Edelbert Dinha, was in the Zimbabwe squad at the 2006 Nations Cup and was close to Yohane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tried calling him from Saturday up to Monday, and we couldn\u2019t reach him,\u201d Dinha told BBC Sport. \u201cThen I went to the police station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles was a quiet person, always smiling, he never argued with anyone.
