Photograph courtesy of GCIS.<\/p>\n<p>THE DEBATE over President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s State of the Nation Address has continued, with MPs calling on him to lead the nation rather than serve the interests of his ruling party as he delivered his speech.<\/p>\n<p>After admitting that the government would not generate employment but will instead create an environment for the private sector to do so on the first day of discussion on Monday, 14 January, Ramaphosa came in for a barrage of criticism on the second day of debate on Tuesday, 15 January. Opposition parties said that his flip-flopping after years of pledging to generate employment was detrimental to the country\u2019s economic well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Treasurer General of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Omphile Maotwe, said that for the president to delegate job creation to the private sector was the equivalent of allowing the beneficiaries of racism to solve problems caused by the very racist conditions that brought about their wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Mkhuleko Hlengwa, a member of Parliament for the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), said it was clear that Ramaphosa was being derailed by African National Congress (ANC) alliance partners such as the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), who were not elected to positions but have assumed power through the governing party\u2019s nomination process. Gwede Mantashe, head of the African National Congress (ANC) and Minister of Minerals and Energy, accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of using the apartheid policy of divide and rule by submitting a resolution of no confidence against all ministers but not against President Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n<p>Mantashe said that the motion sponsored by the DA, which was introduced by leader John Steenhuisen on Monday, 14 February, was a perfect case of racism 101, similar to what he had witnessed while working in the mines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that racism has gained strength, it calls on us as revolutionaries to refuel our energies and recognize that we are swimming against the stream,\u201d he stated.
