{"id":978879,"date":"2022-02-06T17:27:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T17:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/06\/ex-caf-presidents-ban-overturned-by-cas\/"},"modified":"2022-02-06T17:27:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T17:27:46","slug":"ex-caf-presidents-ban-overturned-by-cas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/06\/ex-caf-presidents-ban-overturned-by-cas\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-CAF president&#8217;s ban overturned by CAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"390\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-11.44.22-PM-696x390.png\"   alt=\"Issa Hayatou\" title=\"Issa Hayatou\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Issa Hayatou<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has overturned the one-year ban handed out by Fifa to former Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Issa Hayatou.<\/p>\n<p>Football\u2019s world governing body had ruled\u00a0that the Cameroonian had breached its code of ethics when signing African football\u2019s largest-ever deal with French media company Lagardere in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-year contract, which ran from 2017-2028, was\u00a0worth one billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Fifa had ruled that Hayatou, now 75, had failed in his fiduciary duties to Caf by neglecting a rival bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing its deliberations, the Panel found that there was insufficient evidence to establish a violation of the Fifa Code of Ethics which would justify the sanctions imposed on Issa Hayatou by Fifa,\u201d Cas said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a consequence, the CAS Panel upheld the appeal and set aside the challenged decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Zurich-based organisation stated that Hayatou, who ran African football from 1988 to 2017, had failed to make Caf\u2019s Executive Committee aware of a larger bid worth $1.2 billion dollars from an Egyptian media company called Presentation Sports.<\/p>\n<p>While Fifa said the neglect of this bid cost Caf financially, Hayatou had argued that the offer, which came on the eve of Caf signing with Lagardere, could not be taken seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company PS had a capital of just several thousands of dollars and made an offer of US$1.2 billion,\u201d Hayatou\u2019s legal team stated when addressing Fifa last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe offer was not serious, being slid under the door of [then Caf vice-president Suketu] Patel\u2019s hotel room, instead of officially presenting it to Caf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November 2019, Caf \u2013 during a period when it was working in partnership with Fifa \u2013 cancelled the TV and marketing deal with Lagardere, saying it had breached competition rules.<\/p>\n<p>The France-based Lagardere (now known as Sportfive) said it would fight to enforce the contract, describing Caf\u2019s move as \u201cunlawful, unreasonable and unjustified\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The fine of $30,000 will be overturned for a man who said he felt \u2018wronged by the accusations\u2019 made against him last year.<\/p>\n<p>Hayatou was a member of Fifa\u2019s Executive Committee, today called the Fifa Council, from 1990 to 2017 and was briefly Acting Fifa president between 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, which hosts the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday when Mohammed Salah\u2019s Egypt take on Sadio Mane\u2019s Senegal<\/p>\n<p>            <!--  [embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=videoseries[\/embed]<!--\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>--><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"eLPY726mCtw\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"My Daughter Durga Chat Room on Adom TV (4-2-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eLPY726mCtw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Issa Hayatou The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has overturned the one-year ban handed out by Fifa to former Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Issa Hayatou.
