Raith, defending the move, had said that he was \u201ca proven goalscorer\u201d and that \u201chis footballing ability\u201d was \u201cour foremost consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two club directors, the captain of its women\u2019s team, the employability officer for the club\u2019s community foundation and shirt sponsor Val McDermid all ended their association with the club over the signing.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s team also reprinted their jerseys without the club\u2019s crest and put in an application to have their affiliation with the club ended.<\/p>\n<p>Scotland\u2019s first minister Nicola Sturgeon and former prime minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown \u2014 who is a supporter of the club \u2014 both condemned the decision to sign him.<\/p>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 2 -->\n\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Goodwillie Raith Rovers have backed down over the signing of David Goodwillie, who was ruled to be a rapist in a 2017 civil case, after previously saying they would stand by the player.
