{"id":921016,"date":"2022-01-31T07:19:14","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T07:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/news\/2022\/01\/31\/girl-10-drowns-at-gordons-bay-beach\/"},"modified":"2022-01-31T07:19:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T07:19:14","slug":"girl-10-drowns-at-gordons-bay-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/01\/31\/girl-10-drowns-at-gordons-bay-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Girl, 10, drowns at Gordons Bay Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/5d5bac96-cc71-5ed3-8207-d4c8a291c0a4&#038;operation=CROP&#038;offset=0x123&#038;resize=2008x1130.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div><!--sse--><\/p>\n<p>Cape Town &#8211; A 10-year-old girl has drowned at a Cape Town beach at the weekend, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alan Meiklejohn, the NSRI Gordons Bay Station Commander, the girl had been swimming with her brother when she may have waded too deep into the water on Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Her brother raised the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 11.09am,  NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew and GB Med ambulance services were activated following reports from City of Cape Town (CoCT) lifeguards at Gordons Bay Main Beach of a drowning in progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CoCT water rescue network was activated, and CoCT Law Enforcement, the SA Police Services, Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and ER24 ambulance services also responded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"RelatedArticlescss__StyledRelatedArticles-sc-10g88yu-0 ezIKFV\">\n<h2><span>MORE ON THIS<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe sea rescue craft Boetie Woltemade was launched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn arrival on the scene, lifeguards had initiated a search for a local 10-year-old female missing in the surf,\u201d Meiklejohn said.<\/p>\n<p>He said NSRI crew members and emergency services joined in the search, and the girl was located and recovered from the water approximately 50 metres across the beach line from where she had been in the water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts were commenced, and the girl was transported to hospital by an ER24 ambulance in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>CPR continued to be administered in the ambulance en route to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>According to ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak, the girl was declared dead at the hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhen she was found, she had no signs of life. Paramedics initiated CPR and rushed her to a nearby hospital.
