The two Africa giants met today at the quarter-final of the ongoing Africa cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon. The first half of the encounter finished in Morocco’s favor as they lead at halftime by a scoreline of 0-1 after the VAR had awarded a penalty for them just minutes into the game.<\/p>\n

With just four minutes on the clock, PSG and Morocco full back, Achraf Hakimi, fell inside the area despite not appearing to have been touched by the Egypt left back. After the incident, Senegalese referee, Maguette Ndiaye was called by the VAR to watch the incident again on the pitch side monitor but despite the fact that there was no meaningful contact on Hakimi, the central referee failed to rescind his decision. To me, I believe the decision is contentious, and it shouldn’t have stand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The same story that has plagued the ongoing Africa cup of Nations tournament still get to repeat itself again today. The Egypt bench and even those on the pitch almost lose their head after the penalty decision. To me, Hakimi had lost the ball, and he only fell in the knowledge that the Egypt left back will kick him, something which the full back failed to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On a good day, Achraf Hakimi should have been given a yellow card for dissent. Where I also think the VAR was wrong is that, after calling the referee to watch on the pitch side monitor, they should have shown him the different angles of the incident for him to make the correct call. It’s always easy for onlookers to blame the central referee, but in truth, they used to act most times on what they see.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Those behind the monitors are the ones that suppose to have vetted the decision very well and make the correct call.\u00a0<\/p>\n
