Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Presidential candidate hopeful for the New Patriotic Party, Afriyie Akoto made an appearance before Parliament to answer some questions from the members of the house. In one of his responses to a question that was related to inadequate supply of fertilizers to farmers, Afriyie Akoto made mention of two important terms, commercial and non-commercial farming. A member from the minority caucus questioned the Minister to distinguish between these two terms to make him accountable next time.<\/p>\n

This was the response of the Agric Minister.<\/p>\n

“It is a very simple answer. By definition, a smallholder farm is one not more than 5 acres or two hectares. And that is the basis on which we plan fertilizers for smallholders”<\/p>\n

Speaker Bagbin later waited for a while and told the members to further question the Minister for his response since it was ambiguous.<\/p>\n

“I expect that there will be a substantive question on this matter. Because the difference between commercial farming and small-scale farming cannot be limited to the size only or acreage. There are other things involved like the value of the investment, the cropping, and the input into the farming”, he explained.<\/p>\n
