{"id":766940,"date":"2022-01-26T17:13:04","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T17:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/01\/26\/eu-court-overturns-1-2-billion-antitrust-fine-against-chip-maker-intel\/"},"modified":"2022-01-26T17:13:04","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T17:13:04","slug":"eu-court-overturns-1-2-billion-antitrust-fine-against-chip-maker-intel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/01\/26\/eu-court-overturns-1-2-billion-antitrust-fine-against-chip-maker-intel\/","title":{"rendered":"EU court overturns $1.2 billion antitrust fine against chip maker Intel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/EU-court-overturns-12-billion-antitrust-fine-against-chip-maker-Intel.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"story_dl\">Jan. 26 (UPI) &#8212;<\/span> A top court of the European Union on Wednesday struck down a massive fine that was levied against U.S. chip maker Intel more than a decade ago for purported anti-competitive behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Intel was ordered by the European Commission in 2009 to pay a $1.2 billion penalty for engaging in anti-competitive behavior for several years in the 2000s involving its x86 microprocessors.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"mt-5 text-center mb-5\">\n<div class=\"ad_tag\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Intel appealed the fine and a constituent court of the Court of Justice of the European Union decided Wednesday that the European Commission had erred in its judgment involving Intel&#8217;s rebate scheme 13 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The commission&#8217;s analysis is incomplete and does not make it possible to establish to the requisite legal standard that the rebates at issue were capable of having, or likely to have, anti-competitive effects,&#8221; the court states in its decision.<\/p>\n<p>The same court actually upheld the fine on appeal in 2014, but was ordered by the EU Court of Justice to re-examine the case.<\/p>\n<p>Intel told CNBC that the chip maker would have a response after a thorough review of Wednesday&#8217;s ruling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan. 26 (UPI) &#8212; A top court of the European Union on Wednesday struck down a massive fine that was levied against U.S. chip maker Intel more than a decade ago for purported anti-competitive behavior.
