It’s important to know the places where our leaders came from, it’s more important to know how they became leaders and chairman. Not every great leader was born with wealth and privilege. In fact, some of the greatest leaders came from the most humble of abodes. So, let’s look at some of our favorite birthplaces of the Heads of State and Prime Ministers of Ghana<\/p>\n
Dr. K.Nkrumah (1909-1972) was the first prime minister of independent Ghana on 6 March 1957, and also becoming president of the republic on 1 July 1960. Nkrumah was born in the village of Nkroful in the Western Region.<\/p>\n

Maj.-Gen.J.A.Ankrah (1915-1992) was the leader of the coup that overthrow Nkrumah, and also he was chairman of the National Liberation Council. He was born in Accra, where he died from natural causes.<\/p>\n
Brig. A.A.Afrifa (1936-1979), who had played a major role in the 1966 coup, A.A.Afrifare replaced Ankrah as chairman of the NLC in April 1969. Afrifa was born in Mampong-Ashanti.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr.K.A.Busia (1913-1978) was elected Prime Minister as head of the Progress Party, His government was overthrown by military coup in 1972.<\/p>\n
Busia was born in Wenchi in the Brong-Ahafo Region.<\/p>\n
E.A.Akufo-Addo (1906-1979) was one of the Big Six who fought for independence in 1957. He was the appointed president until the military coup of Acheampong. He was born in Dodowa, now in the Greater Accra Region.<\/p>\n
Col. I.K.Acheampong (1931-1979), he was the leader that overthrow the Busia government, becoming Chairman of the National Redemption Council (1972), and the Supreme Military Council (1975). Acheampong was born in Kumasi, and died in Accra.<\/p>\n
Lt.Gen.F.W.K.Akuffo (1937-79) was a leader of the SMC who led an internal coup to overthrow Acheampong. He was born in Akropong in the Eastern Region.<\/p>\n
Dr. H. Limann (1934-98), was the first northerner to rule Ghana. His government was overthrown by another Rawlings-led coup after only two years.<\/p>\n
Limann was born in the village of Gwollu, Upper West Region,\u00a0<\/p>\n
1981-2001 Jerry Rawlings<\/p>\n
\u00a0Flt-Lt.J.J.K.Rawlings (1947) overthrow Limann and set up the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rawlings was born in Accra, the son of a Scotsman, James Ramsey John<\/p>\n
2001-09 John Kufuor<\/p>\n
John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor (.1938) was born in a village called Dabaa on the west side of Kumasi. He served two terms as president and leader of the New Patriotic Party.<\/p>\n
2009-12 John Mills<\/p>\n
Prof. John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills (1944-2012) was born in Tarkwa in the Western Region. After Kufuor’s two terms of office, he was voted in as president of Ghana Mills was the first president to die while in office.<\/p>\n
2012-16 John Mahama<\/p>\n
John Dramani Mahama, (1958) was vice-president to President Mills, and was sworn into the office of president after the death of Mills. He was born in Damongo in the Northern Region.\u00a0<\/p>\n
2017 Nana Akufo-Addo<\/p>\n
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (1944) returned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to power and he has served two terms as president. Akufo-Addo was born in central Accra.<\/p>\n
