{"id":741936,"date":"2022-01-09T16:39:08","date_gmt":"2022-01-09T16:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/01\/09\/utag-to-strike-on-monday\/"},"modified":"2022-01-09T16:39:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-09T16:39:08","slug":"utag-to-strike-on-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/01\/09\/utag-to-strike-on-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"UTAG to strike on Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"348\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1629390632_945_STRIKE-Copy-696x348.jpg\"   alt=\"strike\" title=\"STRIKE logo\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced that its members would be withdrawing their services on Monday, January 10.<\/p>\n<p>According to UTAG, the strike is occasioned by the government\u2019s failure to address the worsening conditions of service of lecturers.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement dated January 8, UTAG explained that government has flouted the agreed timelines to address their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The leadership of the lecturers union \u201creiterated its resolve to follow through with the decision to withdraw teaching and related activities until further notice.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerally, our members have decried the pittance agreed to be paid as annual research allowance and would want to have government reconsider the payment of a more realistic research allowance as this is critical to our research output, promotion and ultimately national development,\u201d part of the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>UTAG had initially embarked on strike in August, 2021, which lasted for weeks. They requested government to restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012 which they said is far better than what pertains currently.<\/p>\n<p>Following the strike action, a Memorandum of Agreement signed by the government and UTAG, sighted by JoyNews after the meeting, indicated that, \u201cboth parties agree that there is a need to get back to the negotiating table from the week beginning Monday 23rd August, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the period, government and UTAG will among other things, negotiate the research component of the Book and Research Allowance, market premium, and non-basic allowance.<\/p>\n<p>However, UTAG says for months, their concerns have not been addressed as per the agreed timelines in previous negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG UTAG), Prof. Ransford Gyampo, had stressed that until their conditions of service are improved, they will not hesitate to withdraw their services.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, UTAG has called on their employers to as a matter of urgency, restore members to the 2013 Interim Market Premium (IMP) of 114% of Basic Salary in the interim.<\/p>\n<p>They also urged the government to formulate guidelines to implement the appropriate recommendations to address the conditions of service of the university teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the uneasiness among UTAG members, any delay by the Employer would further exacerbate<br \/>the already fragile academic calendar to the detriment of all stakeholders,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>            <!--  [embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=videoseries[\/embed]<!--\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>--><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"-4PznqjJcwA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fire Outbreak: Properties destroyed at Bridgestone Tyre Service  \u2013 Adom TV News (7-1-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-4PznqjJcwA?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced that its members would be withdrawing their services on Monday, January 10.
