It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. In 2000 the University of Hawaii reported a river of lava that came out of the side of Mawson Peak. A volcano was discovered that remains active. This is a forbidden place not only because of the danger posed by the volcano but also because of the very adverse and unstable weather conditions . Tourists and foreigners are prohibited from entering the site.
