A traffic collision, also called a motor vehicle collision, car accident or car crash, occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree, pole or building.<\/p>\n
Road accidents in Ghana remains a major public health and development challenge. They are among the top 10 causes of deaths in the country, draining about 2.54% of its gross domestic product annually.<\/p>\n
Recent reports have revealed, that between the period of January and July 2021, about 8 deaths and 43 injuries were recorded daily on Ghana’s roads.<\/p>\n

The Causes of Road Accidents, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), of the Ghana Police Service includes; Over Speeding, Drunken Driving, Distractions to Driver, Red Light Jumping, Avoiding Safety Gears like Seat belts and Helmets, Non-adherence to lane driving, overtaking in a wrong manner and etc.<\/p>\n
As usual, the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has released the details statistics of the year 2021 total road accident cases in Ghana.<\/p>\n

In their recent official release,\u00a0Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), of the Ghana Police has revealed that, a total of 2,924 lives were lost through road accident in 2021.<\/p>\n
According to the report, this is a 12.94% rise, compared to last two years\u2019 statistics which state that 2,589 people got killed in road crashes.<\/p>\n

The details of the MTTD report for the year ending 2021 is as follows:\u00a015,680 people are battling with various degrees of injury. This, according to the MTTD\u00a0is also a 1.05% rise compared to 2020 injury figure which was 15,517.<\/p>\n
According to the MTTD, out of the total of 2,924 deaths that were recorded in the year 2021, 1,266 deaths and 4,758 injuries occurred as a result of motorcycle related accidents.<\/p>\n
The report further revealed that, a total of 2,930 pedestrians were knocked down. Again, 28,152 vehicles were involved in road carnages last year…which is 11.93 percent rise compared to figures in the previous year 2020.<\/p>\n

In the regional breakdown, the North East Region recorded\u00a0least mortality, with a total of 18 deaths, and 57 injuries. Oti Region recorded the second least mortality, with a total of 20 deaths and 19 injuries.<\/p>\n
The worst hit Region…. the Ashanti Region recorded a total of 606 deaths, with 3,890 injuries, followed by the Eastern Region with 471 deaths and 2,598 injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Greater Accra, also recorded 442 deaths, and 2,611 injuries in the year ending 2021.<\/p>\n
