Ghanaians are conspicuously unhappy about the new development announced by the government to increase the salary of all public sector workers by seven (7) percent in this new year 2022 to combat the relative economic hardships caused by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic that has bedevilled the nation and other nations across the world. <\/p>\n
According to some reactions from the public to the earlier announcement made by the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon Ignatius Baffour Awuah that steps are being taken by government to increase the salary of all public sector workers by seven percent as an incentive to workers and also as a way of reviving the distressed economy. <\/p>\n
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana show, the National Communications officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, indicated that despite the fact that the seven percent salary increment by government is a good intervention, the economy is not in tatters solely because of the Covid-19 pandemic but most importantly by the economic mismanagement by the Akufo-Addo\/Bawumia government. <\/p>\n

He stated that the economy is so hard that cost of living has risen beyond unreasonable such that statistically speaking the seven percent salary increment is insufficient to combat the dire situation. He said that we are in a country where things that used to sell at 2-5 cedis and 10-15 are now being sold at whopping 20-30 cedis and 40-50 cedis respectively. <\/p>\n
“The President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia NPP led government thought it wise to increase salaried workers in the public sector because they realized how hard the economy has become under their governance. However, even with this development, I am still convinced that none of these interventions whatsoever could avert such economic mismanagement by the self-proclaimed economic messiah who is now an IT champion. I can site many instances where we can say that cost of living is beyond measure,” he told Dr. Randy Abbey, the host.<\/p>\n
Many Ghanaian workers in the public sector represented by the various trade unions are threatening to embark on various forms of strikes if their conditions of service are not improved according to their specific demands. All these attests to the fact that even if salaries are increased by 20 percent, the Akufo-Addo\/Bawumia government have failed woefully in the eyes of those who held them in trust to deliver. <\/p>\n
