Teachers in all the 46 public colleges of education across the country are staying away from the lecture theatres in response to a nationwide industrial action declared by the Colleges of Education Teachers\u2019 Association of Ghana (CETAG).<\/p>\n

The indefinite strike, which started today, Thursday, January 6, 2022 is to protest the government\u2019s failure to implement conditions of service which had been agreed to.<\/p>\n
Nathan Ohene Gyan, National President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana, said the decision followed an emergency meeting of their national council.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the association with a plan on how it intends to pay the arrears that have accrued because of the new compensated allowances agreed between October, November and December.<\/p>\n

I think someone somewhere has not done their work well which has brought us to where we are now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Teachers at the University of Ghana also say they are going to stay away from the lecture halls, starting, next week Monday, January 10, 2022, to back their demand for better conditions of service.<\/p>\n
Professor Ransford Gyampo, Secretary of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), insists they are going to fight on until they receive what is due them.<\/p>\n
According to him, they have communicated the decision to embark on industrial action to the appropriate authorities.<\/p>\n
Prof Ransford Gyampo sad; \u201cnotices, as far as I am concerned, have been sent to all stakeholders about the intention to strike because agreements reached have not been respected. Timelines agreed upon have not been adhered to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university teachers have been asking for improved conditions of service and upwards adjustment of their salaries.<\/p>\n
Although the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has agreed to the government\u2019s proposed payment of US$1,600 research allowance to their members, the University of Ghana Chapter has strongly kicked against that.<\/p>\n
It has called for the national executive committee of the University Teachers Association of Ghana to withdraw a communiqu\u00e9 saying, that an agreement was reached by UTAG members to accept the research allowance and a proposal for the government to complete labour market survey report, to determine the review of the interim market premium by December 2021 for implementation in 2022.<\/p>\n
