<\/div>\nPresident Nana Akufo-Addo says concerns raised against the controversial \u2018One teacher One laptop\u2019 policy will be given due consideration and attention.<\/p>\n
The government facilitated the procurement of some 280,000 laptops to be distributed to teachers across the country. <\/p>\n
The arrangement required that teachers pay 30 percent of the cost of \u00a21,550 through deductions from their salaries while the government paid 70 percent.<\/p>\n
Several teacher unions protested this, raising agitations over the quality of the laptops and what they described as the unapproved deductions from their professional development allowances.<\/p>\n

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) criticised the cost-sharing module in the policy while citing a lack of transparency in its implementation.<\/p>\n
They alluded to the \u2018failed\u2019 partnership between the government and RLG to school laptops.<\/p>\n
At the 6th\u00a0Quadrennial National Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo noted the teachers\u2019 concerns with the policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m glad to hear how much you welcome the supply of laptops and promise you that the other related matters of concern will be addressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood relations between GNAT and my government are matters of importance to me, and I will do my very best to promote such a relationship,\u201d he assured.<\/p>\n
Mr Akufo-Addo added that expenditure on education has increased to 95% in his time as the country\u2019s president.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo great has this government\u2019s commitment to education been that public expenditure on education has almost doubled from \u00a220.7 billion between 2013 and 2016, that is in the Mahama era, to \u00a240.4 billion between 2017 and 2020, that is in the Akufo-Addo era, representing an increase of some 95%.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition to the yearly average increase in salaries over the last five years, my government is, for the first time in our nation\u2019s history, paying a professional allowance to teachers. We have abolished the three months\u2019 pay policy for teachers, we have cleared the arrears, and promotions due teachers have also been affected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
