{"id":1271385,"date":"2022-12-29T19:25:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-29T19:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/29\/brazil-football-legend-pele-dies-aged-82\/"},"modified":"2022-12-29T19:25:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-29T19:25:00","slug":"brazil-football-legend-pele-dies-aged-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/29\/brazil-football-legend-pele-dies-aged-82\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil football legend Pele dies aged 82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1670189967_194_127836817_gettyimages-1135873396-1-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"Pele is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games\" title=\"Pele is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pele is Brazil&#8217;s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brazilian football legend Pele, arguably the greatest player ever, has died at the age of 82.<\/p>\n<p>Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, he is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.<\/p>\n<p>The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa\u2019s Player of the Century in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>He had been suffering with\u00a0kidney and prostate problems\u00a0in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Pele had surgery to\u00a0remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021\u00a0at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, after the tumour was detected in routine tests.<\/p>\n<p>He was readmitted to the hospital in late November 2022.<\/p>\n<p>His daughter Kely Nascimento has kept fans updated on her father\u2019s condition with regular social media updates from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday she posted a picture of what appeared to be Pele\u2019s family\u2019s hands on his body in the hospital and wrote: \u201cEverything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely.
