{"id":1270412,"date":"2022-12-27T12:41:28","date_gmt":"2022-12-27T12:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/27\/more-praise-for-parliament-for-its-scrutiny-of-2023-budget\/"},"modified":"2022-12-27T12:41:28","modified_gmt":"2022-12-27T12:41:28","slug":"more-praise-for-parliament-for-its-scrutiny-of-2023-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/27\/more-praise-for-parliament-for-its-scrutiny-of-2023-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"More praise for Parliament for its scrutiny of 2023 Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Alban-Bagbin.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\">\n<p>The Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Inclusive Governance, otherwise called the Citizens\u2019 Coalition, has described as a \u201cbold and long overdue step\u201d, Parliament\u2019s close scrutiny of the 2023 Budget of the Government of Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Coalition, Parliament\u2019s scrutiny of the budget \u201creflects a positive outcome of the current \u2018Hung Parliament\u2019 that should be celebrated,\u201d and that \u201cGiven the economic challenges that faces the country, Parliament will have to intensify its oversight activities including reenergizing the Committee on Government Assurances and empowering Standing and Sector Committees to maintain strict vigilance over the implementation of the Appropriation Act by the Executive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commendation by the Citizens\u2019 Coalition follows a similar one by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, which equally gave Parliament the thumbs up for doing a diligent job on the 2023 budget.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5qCSTu1oIW\"><p>CDD-Ghana commends Parliament for its scrutiny of the 2023 budget<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u201cCDD-Ghana commends Parliament for its scrutiny of the 2023 budget\u201d \u2014 MyJoyOnline.com\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/cdd-ghana-commends-parliament-for-its-scrutiny-of-the-2023-budget\/embed\/#?secret=Edz6qL02Yu#?secret=5qCSTu1oIW\" data-secret=\"5qCSTu1oIW\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Citizens\u2019 Coalition particularly welcomed \u201cthe decision of Parliament to reallocate the GH\u00a280 million allocated for the construction of the National Cathedral to the Roads and Highways and Communication Ministries and to slash the allocation to the Contingency Vote by half among other cost cutting measures in their approval of the 2023 Budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the cost cutting measures, the Coalition notes Parliament also defunded the Special Development Initiatives and Monitoring and Evaluation secretariats at the Office of the President. This responds to some of the Coalition\u2019s proposals on areas of expenditure that government can still cut down. We reiterate our call on government to look closely at the cost of running government and reduce it further.
