James Gunn\u00a0has addressed the backlash over his decision for\u00a0Henry Cavill to not return\u00a0as Superman.<\/p>\n
The DC Studios co-head addressed the \u201cuproarious and unkind\u201d response via a series of tweets in which Gunn promised his decision-making for the future of the DC Extended Universe would not be affected by \u201cdisrespectful outcry.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years,\u201d Gunn\u00a0wrote<\/a>, on the behalf of co-CEO Peter Safran and himself.<\/p>\n Though he doesn\u2019t mention Superman by name, the character debuted in the comic book\u00a0Actions Comics<\/em>\u00a0#1, published in 1938.<\/p>\n Adding<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cno one loves to be harassed or called names,\u201d Gunn\u00a0continued<\/a>, \u201cDisrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us. But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.\u201d<\/p>\n Read Gunn\u2019s full response to the Superman backlash below.<\/p>\n Cavill\u00a0announced his return\u00a0as Superman just one day ahead of Gunn being announced as\u00a0co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer\u00a0of DC Studios in late October. Gunn is splitting duties with\u00a0Safran, who has not only worked on DC films such as\u00a0Aquaman\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Shazam!,\u00a0<\/em>but produced Gunn\u2019s DCEU projects\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0and its\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>\u00a0HBO Max spinoff.<\/p>\n Less than two months later, however, Cavill\u00a0revealed\u00a0he was no longer reprising the role. Gunn confirmed the actor\u2019s exit,\u00a0saying<\/a>\u00a0the \u201cinitial stages\u201d of the next Superman film will focus on \u201can earlier part\u201d of the superhero\u2019s life.<\/p>\n Cavill\u2019s Superman isn\u2019t the only casualty of Gunn\u2019s new direction for DC Studios.
