Having the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check if you or your child has measles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold-like symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first symptoms of measles include a high temperature, a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, a cough and red, sore, watery eyes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spots in the mouth <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Small white spots may appear inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips a few days later. These spots usually last a few days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The measles rash<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A rash usually appears a few days after the cold-like symptoms. <\/p>\n<p>The rash starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.Photo credit: NHS<\/p>\n<p>The spots of the measles rash are sometimes raised and join together to form blotchy patches. They\u2019re not usually itchy. <\/p>\n<p>The rash looks brown or red on white skin. It may be harder to see on brown and black skin.Photo credit: NHS<\/p>\n<p>Information:<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re not sure it\u2019s measles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very unlikely to be measles if you\u2019ve had both doses of the MMR vaccine or you\u2019ve had measles before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urgent advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask for an urgent doctor appointment if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. you think you or your child may have measles<\/p>\n<p>2. you\u2019ve been in close contact with someone who has measles and you\u2019ve not had measles before or you\u2019ve not had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine <\/p>\n<p>3. you\u2019ve been in close contact with someone who has measles and you\u2019re pregnant, measles can be serious in pregnancy<\/p>\n<p>4. you have a weakened immune system and think you have measles or have been in close contact with someone with measles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to look after yourself or your child<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Measles usually starts to get better in about a week.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing a doctor, there are things you can do to help ease the symptoms and reduce the risk of spreading the infection.<\/p>\n<p>It can help to:<\/p>\n<p>1. rest and drink plenty fluids, such as water, to avoid dehydration<\/p>\n<p>2 take paracetamol\u00a0or ibuprofen\u00a0to relieve a high temperature, do not give aspirin to children under 16 years<\/p>\n<p>3. use cotton wool soaked in warm water to gently remove any crusts from your or your child\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stay off nursery, school, or work for at least 4 days from when the rash first appears.<\/p>\n<p>Also try to avoid close contact with babies, people who are pregnant and people with weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid spreading or catching measles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Measles is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. There are things you can do to reduce the risk of spreading or catching it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. wash your hands often with soap and warm water<\/p>\n<p>2. use tissues when you cough or sneeze<\/p>\n<p>3. throw used tissues in the bin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>do not share cutlery, cups, towels, clothes, or bedding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Complications of measles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Measles can lead to serious problems if it spreads to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or brain.<\/p>\n<p>Problems that can be caused by measles include pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures (fits).<\/p>\n<p>These problems are rare, but some people are more at risk.
