The sun is starting to rise over the Yaeda Valley and the start of a new day means one thing for the Hadza tribe. It\u2019s time to begin their daily ritual of finding the food that will sustain them until next sunrise.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">For the women, this means heading out with long wooden sticks to forage for berries and dig for edible tubers. For the men, it\u2019s a time to hunt. With handmade bows and arrows, they will cover up to 40km on foot by midday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-3\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.21353949017968%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-3.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127992592_pic1.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man stands looking out across woodland as the sun rises\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-3.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">In the summer of 2023 a group of ultra-marathon runners will arrive on Hadza land for an 80km race. Competitors will use Hadza survival skills to sustain themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">There will be no feed zones or energy gels. Runners won\u2019t be allowed to bring supplies. Water will have to be gathered from natural rainwater cisterns in baobab trees while the trees\u2019 fruit will be among their energy sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-6\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-6.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127992986_pic2.jpg\" alt=\"A baobab tree on Hadza land\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-6.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">The Hadza tribe have been living this way in this region for thousands of years. They are one of the world\u2019s few remaining hunter-gatherer tribes. They live sustainably day-to-day off their native land in the Yaeda Valley, don\u2019t hoard food or resources and have no history of famine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">However, their population has diminished to 1,300 because of encroachment from pastoral tribes and farming settlements. They have lost 90% of their land since the 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-9\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:136.58675799086757%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-9.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127992988_pic3.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man sits on a rocky outcrop, facing the camera with the valley below in the background\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-9.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">\u201cWhen I was a child there were no other tribes in the area up to 80km from here,\u201d tribe elder Maroba says as he sits on a rock overlooking the valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">\u201cThe game that was here then \u2013 everything from elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest \u2013 was plentiful for hunting. Slowly that changed and people started moving in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-12\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:136.56174334140437%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-12.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127989875_pic4.jpg\" alt=\"A woman forages for food\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-12.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">The race will take place during the dry season, when the landscape looks barren and unforgiving. But the Hadza women emphasise there is an abundance of food if you know where to look. During a morning forage, Apooa shows us a greyish looking branch that signals there are edible tubers underneath. She says: \u201cWe\u2019re digging for makalitako and this food will sustain us until this evening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-14\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-14.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127989877_pic5.jpg\" alt=\"Two Hadza men pose for a portrait with their hunting equipment\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-14.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Early the next morning we\u2019re about to experience first-hand some of the course with two tribe members, Moshi and Sindano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">The Hadza are an entirely egalitarian society in relation to gender and age. However, there\u2019s a definite hierarchy in the expertise in our running group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-17\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-17.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127989879_pic6.jpg\" alt=\"Two Hadza men accompany two visitors on a run through their territory\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-17.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">With a bow and arrow in one hand and the other in his pocket, Moshi is moving fast over rocky, uneven, hilly terrain with Sindano, alert to any potential hunting opportunity. You\u2019ve got to run to keep up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">Earlier that morning, the route of next year\u2019s race was explained to Moshi by Mika Peterson, our guide and translator from the <\/span><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.$link-2.0\">Dorobo Fund,<\/span><span class=\"gs-u-ml- gel-icon\" style=\"height:15px;width:15px;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.$link-2.1\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.$link-2.1.0\"><title data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.$link-2.1.0.0\">external-link<\/title><path d=\"M12 0v5h11.5l-5 5H0v22h22V17.5l-2 2V30H2V12h14.5l-7.8 7.7 3.6 3.6L27 8.5V20h5V0H12z\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.$link-2.1.0.1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.3\"> a conservation arm of Dorobo Safaris that works with the Hadza to retain land rights. He will work with ultra-marathon expert Josue Stephens and his company Barefoot Adventures to organise the race, which doesn\u2019t have a name yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-20\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:136.58675799086757%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-20.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127989881_pic7.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man poses with his hunting equipment\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-20.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">The Hadza don\u2019t use kilometres or miles. Mika \u2013 switching between Swahili and the Hadza\u2019s click language, Hadzane \u2013 explains the route using well-known Hadza landmarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">\u201cResearchers have put trackers on Hadza people and it is very common for a Hadza to go off hunting and do 30 or 40km in a morning,\u201d says Daudi Peterson, Mika\u2019s father, who has been working with the Hadza since the 1990s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-23\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:136.58675799086757%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-23.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127989883_pic8.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man poses for a portrait\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-23.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">Race organiser Stephens has spent extended periods of his life running with the Tarahuma tribe in Mexico, subject of the best-selling book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. He was drawn to organising a race with the Hadza in part by their athlete-like endurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">Studies have shown that a typical Hadza tribe member completes the UK\u2019s recommended weekly guidance for exercise \u2013 150 minutes \u2013 every day. They have also found the Hadza have enviable heart health, with low blood pressure and cholesterol levels, even in old age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-26\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-26.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990317_pic9.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza woman sits preparing food\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-26.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">Some members of the Hadza group tell us they would like to do the race, with Mika adding: \u201cSomeone like Moshi, we\u2019ll probably ask to stay near the back to help anyone who is struggling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-28\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-28.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990319_pic10.jpg\" alt=\"Hadza members build a fire\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-28.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">It will be a tough course for the 50 to 100 racers expected to compete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">Eighty kilometres in temperatures over 30C at 1,300m altitude (the same as the UK\u2019s highest mountain Ben Nevis) will be difficult enough. The racers will also forage for wild berries, dig for tubers, hand-make arrows, harvest honey and climb the baobab trees for water and fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-31\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.21353949017968%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-31.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990321_pic11.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza tribesperson whittles a wooden arrow shaft\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-31.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-32.0\">\u201cFor the racers, those challenges are going to take a really long time, but I am going to be able to do them really quickly,\u201d Moshi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-33\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:136.56174334140437%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-33.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990323_pic12.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man arms his hunting bow\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-33.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">You can spot the ubiquitous baobab trees from any vantage point in the valley. Their thick trunks give them the appearance of water hydrants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">The baobab is known across Africa as the tree of life and for good reason. It\u2019s one of the world\u2019s largest succulents and can store more than 100,000 litres of water during the rainy season. Its citrus fruit is a well known superfood with six times more vitamin C than an orange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">Mika says: \u201cThe baobab will be the main sustaining food for the race. Racers cannot bring any of their own food and will have to obtain food and drink with skills they learn from the Hadza.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-37\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-37.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990325_pic13.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man holding the fruit of a baobab tree\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-37.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">Midway through a morning hunt on our penultimate day in the valley we stopped to practise our baobab harvesting skills (also known as throwing sticks to knock the fruit off its branches). Moshi is again at the fore, laughing, smiling and teaching us the traditional Hadza hello.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><em data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.$italic-0\">\u2018Am I yega\u2019 <\/em><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.1\">translates as \u2018are you alive?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media gs-u-mb-alt+ qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-40\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:73.22695035460993%;\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-40.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/_127990611_pic14.jpg\" alt=\"A Hadza man holds a honeycomb\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$image-40.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41.0\">Earlier, Moshi had been smoking out killer bees from their hive for honey. It took him minutes to make a small fire, using the friction from branches in a hand-drill technique and dried grass as kindling. They spend money on healthcare, education and settling land disputes. They have lived in this region for tens of thousands of years, but only since 2003 has their traditional territory been officially assigned to them under Tanzanian law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47.0\">On our final afternoon with the Hadza, we spent some time sitting on a huge rock overlooking the Yaeda Valley with Maroba. Asked how the valley has changed in his lifetime, Maroba began a long story, his arms pointing in various directions as he explained the different areas on the horizon, which used to be Hadza land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48.0\">When he had finished talking, we asked how he felt about the encroaching rival tribes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49.0\">He smiled and, with characteristic Hadza compassion, says: \u201cIt\u2019s become a lot harder to be able to live off the land than when I was a child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-50\"><span data-reactid=\".2eyxecwra0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-50.0\">\u201cThe increase of people and pressure, even if we do have these designated areas that have some kind of protection, make it so hard to hunt.
