A reporter covering the\u00a0FIFA World Cup\u00a0\u201cdied suddenly,\u201d a\u00a0Qatar\u00a0newspaper reported \u2013 the same day a security guard was left in intensive care after falling at one of the tournament\u2019s stadiums.<\/p>\n

The Doha-based\u00a0Gulf Times<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>announced Saturday that Al Kass TV photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam \u201cpassed away recently.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Qatari reporter \u201cdied suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,\u201d the\u00a0Gulf Times\u00a0<\/em>tweeted. \u201cWe believe in Allah\u2019s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

How and when al-Misslam died remains unclear. But the announcement of his death came on the same day that a\u00a0security guard\u00a0was left seriously injured after falling at the Lusail Stadium.<\/p>\n

An observer told\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>that the man fell from a \u201csignificant height\u201d at around 2 a.m. on Saturday following Argentina\u2019s quarterfinal win over the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

The security guard, who is reportedly a migrant worker, is said to have plunged from the top outside concourse to the ground. Reports on Sunday suggested he was in a stable but critical condition.<\/p>\n

Qatar\u2019s supreme committee released a statement describing the incident as a \u201cserious fall while on duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital care unit via ambulance,\u201d the statement said, adding that Qatari authorities are \u201cinvestigating the circumstances leading to the fall as a matter of urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n

News of al-Misslam\u2019s death and the security guard\u2019s fall came a day after US journalist\u00a0Grant Wahl\u00a0died.<\/p>\n

Wahl, 48, was covering the Argentina vs. Netherlands game on Friday when he is said to have collapsed in his seat at the Lusail Stadium.<\/p>\n

Witnesses said Wahl was quickly treated by emergency services workers before he was rushed to the hospital.<\/p>\n

The World Cup\u2019s organizing committee did not disclose his cause of death but said it was in contact with the US Embassy.<\/p>\n

In the weeks before his death, Wahl made international headlines after he tweeted that he had been refused entry to the game between the United States and Wales on Nov. 21 because he was wearing a rainbow t-shirt in support of the\u00a0LGBTQ\u00a0community.<\/p>\n

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and signs supporting gay rights have been treated with contempt by authorities at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

Wahl said he was ordered to change his shirt by a security guard when he tried to enter the stadium.<\/p>\n

On Dec. 6, Wahl wrote on his\u00a0Substack\u00a0that he had been feeling unwell and had attended a medical clinic.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy body finally broke down on me,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThree weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he did not have COVID and that medics advised him that he \u201cprobably\u201d had bronchitis, an inflammation of airways in the lungs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I\u2019m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,\u201d Wahl wrote.<\/p>\n
