{"id":1263648,"date":"2022-12-09T23:11:12","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T23:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/09\/neymar-equals-peles-official-brazil-scoring\/"},"modified":"2022-12-09T23:11:12","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T23:11:12","slug":"neymar-equals-peles-official-brazil-scoring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/12\/09\/neymar-equals-peles-official-brazil-scoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Neymar equals Pele&#8217;s &#8216;official&#8217; Brazil scoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3505549-71458148-2560-1440-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"3505549-71458148-2560-1440\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Neymar has equalled Brazil legend Pele\u2019s \u2018official\u2019 goalscoring record of 77 for the men\u2019s national team with his goal against Croatia at the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>World governing body Fifa recognises the record, but the Brazilian Football Confederation and Pele will not because they say he scored 95 goals.<\/p>\n<p>Fifa only counts games between two nations and some of Pele\u2019s goals came in friendlies against club sides.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>Neymar has made 124\u00a0Brazil\u00a0appearances, equalling Pele\u2019s tally from 92 games.<\/p>\n<p>Pele \u2013 who won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970 \u2013 is currently\u00a0receiving treatment in hospital\u00a0in Sao Paulo.<\/p>\n<p>Neymar\u2019s tally is not an overall Brazilian record, with Marta having scored 115 for the women\u2019s team since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>He equalled the record at the end of the first period of extra time in Brazil\u2019s quarter-final against Croatia when he combined with West Ham\u2019s Lucas Paqueta, shrugged off Borna Sosa and fired into the roof of the net from four yards.<\/p>\n<p>However, his side lost 4-2 on penalties, with Neymar yet to take one, after Bruno Petkovic equalised with Croatia\u2019s first shot on target in the 116th minute.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old made his debut on 10 August 2010, scoring his first international goal in the 28th minute of a 2-0 win over the USA.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of his goals have come in World Cups \u2013 four in 2014, two in 2018 and two so far in this tournament in Qatar \u2013 with another five coming in the Copa America.<\/p>\n<p>He won the Confederations Cup in 2013, but his best World Cup run came when Brazil reached the semi-finals in 2014, while his best Copa America campaign ended with a runner-up spot in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on BBC One, former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas said: \u201cFinally, one of the best players in the world turns up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a goal that is.
