FLASHBACK: Amber Heard and Johnny Depp<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n In June, a US jury found Amber Heard defamed her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, with an article in which she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse.<\/p>\n Jurors awarded Mr. Depp \u2013 who denied abusing Ms. Heard \u2013 $15m (\u00a312m) in compensatory and punitive damages.<\/p>\n Her team have now asked for the jury\u2019s verdict to be reversed, or for a new trial entirely.<\/p>\n Ms. Heard, 36, won one of three counter-claims against Mr. Depp, 59, and was awarded $2m (\u00a31.6m) in compensatory damages.<\/p>\n But she is now arguing the trial was held in the wrong state and also objected to the judge\u2019s decision to exclude certain pieces of evidence, including notes from therapists documenting allegations of abuse.<\/p>\n In a lengthy\u00a0written document, obtained by Deadline, her lawyers argued: \u201cThat holding, if allowed to stand, undoubtedly will have a chilling effect on other women who wish to speak about abuse involving powerful men.\u201d<\/p>\n The actress\u2019s team went on to note the previous\u00a0unsuccessful libel suit\u00a0the \u2018Pirates of the Caribbean\u2019 star brought against The Sun newspaper in 2018, for calling him a \u201cwife-beater\u201d in print. Suggesting the subsequent, separate US libel case \u201cshould never have gone to trial\u201d because \u201canother court had already concluded that Depp abused Heard on multiple occasions\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter Depp filed this case, the United Kingdom High Court of Justice [the High Court of England and Wales sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice] ruled in a separate defamation action brought by Depp that Heard\u2019s abuse allegations were true,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n The move comes a month after Mr. Depp\u00a0filed his own formal appeal\u00a0against some of the verdict of the case.
