43-year-old farmer Nana Yaw Sarpong Serebour who hails from Asante Juaben with 22 years of experience in farming has been adjudged the national best farmer for 2022.<\/p>\n
He was awarded at a awards event held at the Jubilee Park in Koforidua, the Eastern region on Friday December 2.<\/p>\n
He was presented with cash prize of GHS1,000,000 and two nights\u2019 full board complimentary stay for two at the Peduase Valley Resort.<\/p>\n
During the event, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians that agriculture will continue to remain a top priority of his government.<\/p>\n
He indicated that a number of investments have been made by his administration in the sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe massive investments\u201d made in the sector attest to his commitment to the sector, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe positive narrative about government\u2019s support to the agricultural sector is that, unlike several other countries, Ghana is better prepared, and has demonstrated resilience to the current adversities threatening to destabilise our food systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has been possible because of the sound, pragmatic policies and programmes rolled out at the inception of my stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Akufo-Addo further stated that in 2016, his government inherited production levels of 1.7million metric tonnes of maize and 665,000 metric tonnes of rice.<\/p>\n
However, under the\u00a0planting for food and jobs\u00a0(PFJ) initiative which he introduced, maize production reached 3.4million tonnes by 2021 and rice to 1.2million metric tonnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe credit must go to our gallant farmers, fishers and value chain actors who embraced the PFJ policy and leveraged the opportunities created by the enabling environment for agricultural development\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
