Will Smith and Trevor Noah<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Will Smith has said his \u201cbottled\u201d rage led him to slap comedian Chris Rock\u00a0on stage at the Oscars in March.<\/p>\n The actor has been interviewed for the first time since the incident, which he described as \u201ca horrific night\u201d.<\/p>\n Appearing on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, he said: \u201cI was going through something that night, you know? Not that that justifies my behaviour at all.\u201d<\/p>\n Smith added that there were \u201cmany nuances and complexities to it\u201d, but added: \u201cI just \u2013 I lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n Smith stormed the stage at the Hollywood award ceremony after Rock made a joke about Smith\u2019s wife Jada\u2019s shaved head. She has alopecia, a hair loss condition.<\/p>\n \u201cI understand how shocking that was for people,\u201d he told Noah. \u201cI was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time.\u201d<\/p>\n He said he also understood the pain he had caused, and recalled the reaction of his nine-year-old nephew that night.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s the sweetest little boy,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe came home and he had stayed up late to see his Uncle Will, and we\u2019re sitting in my kitchen, and he\u2019s on my lap and he\u2019s holding the Oscar, and he\u2019s just like, \u2018Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?\u2019<\/p>\n The interview on the late-night US TV talk show was the first time Smith had been publicly challenged about the attack.<\/p>\n Smith told Noah he understood the often-quoted theory that \u201churt people hurt people\u201d.<\/p>\n Discussing the background to his Oscars assault, he said: \u201cIt was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know? All of that just bubbled up in that moment. That\u2019s not who I want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n Smith has opened up before about growing up in an abusive home.
