{"id":1255411,"date":"2022-11-22T07:42:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-22T07:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/22\/more-than-50-ghanaians-obese\/"},"modified":"2022-11-22T07:42:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T07:42:04","slug":"more-than-50-ghanaians-obese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/22\/more-than-50-ghanaians-obese\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 50% Ghanaians obese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">&#8211;  &#8211;<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- ResponsiveAll --><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Graphic.com.gh reports that 85% of Ghanaians don\u2019t eat properly, and more than 50% are fat or overweight, according to the country\u2019s first comprehensive assessment on obesity and lifestyle.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The research, performed in Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, found the findings not unexpected given worrying data on eating habits and inactivity.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of the population doesn\u2019t exercise, and over 90% don\u2019t eat healthy, based on WHO-recommended fruit and vegetable intake, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Public health specialists believe the study\u2019s conclusions may pose huge health concerns for millions of Ghanaians if left unchecked.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">&#8211;  &#8211;<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- ResponsiveAll --><\/p>\n<p>More than 3,380 persons were questioned in the three metropolises for the GSS\u2019s obesity research.<\/p>\n<p>The GSS addressed height and weight while sampling and collecting data. WHO recommends 400 grams of fruits and vegetables per day, or five 80-gram portions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Eating Right<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">&#8211;  &#8211;<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- ResponsiveAll --><\/p>\n<p>Dr Kingsley Agyemang, Academic Lead of the Ghana Obesity Survey, told the Daily Graphic that obesity is on the rise in Ghana owing to sedentary lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity harms both the individual and the country, he added. He urged for \u201ccontext-specific, culturally sensitive, cost-effective and sustainable\u201d public health initiatives to combat obesity.<\/p>\n<p>He advocated eating five servings of meals, including cooked or raw fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>However, he noted, the survey indicated that most individuals don\u2019t eat fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stakeholder<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first-ever stakeholder engagement obesity workshop in 2019 guided the study\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Over 50 policymakers from various sectors attended. Such interventions could include the mass fitness actions Dr. Agyemang developed in 2020, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKingsley Keep Fit has over 5,000 members in Ghana and has expanded to inter-school events,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Policy impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, Presidential Advisor on Health, praised the study\u2019s policy significance.<\/p>\n<p>The research informed Ghanaian obesity policies.
