The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has accused the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of abusing its power with the Planting for Food and Jobs market on its premises.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot use the ministry as a market to start with because by doing so, they are demobilizing other state institutions from operating,\u201d the General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union, Edward Kareweh, said to Citi News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cFor instance, nobody can set up a market anywhere without the AMA or the local authorities coming to license you to do so. No one can set up a market without fulfilling certain market requirements,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n On November 11, 2022, the Agric Ministry began carting cheap food items to its premises for sale to civil and local government staff as part of efforts to address the high cost of food in the country.<\/p>\n Inflation in Ghana is at 40.4 percent while food inflation is at 43.7 percent.<\/p>\n The ministry had to counter criticism that it is wasting taxpayers\u2019 money<\/strong> with the carting and sale of cheap foodstuff at premises.<\/p>\n But Mr. Kareweh argued that this endeavour was not within the remit of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.<\/p>\n He also said, it was a \u201cmanifestation of the failure of the planting for food and jobs programme.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe main business of the Ministry is to help increase production. It is to help create a market. It is to help reduce the cost of production,\u201d Mr. Kareweh added.<\/p>\n
