At the 2021 Grammys, Beyonc\u00e9 picked up four awards, bringing her total to 28 and making her the winningest woman in Grammy history.<\/p>\n
At the 2023 ceremony, she will have nine chances to add to her total: The 41-year-old star is the top nominee for the 65th annual Grammy Awards, with all but one of her nods coming for her dance-heavy album \u201cRenaissance.\u201d<\/p>\n
She leads a pack that includes Kendrick Lamar, with eight nominations; Adele and Brandi Carlile, with seven apiece; and Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige, Future, DJ Khaled and the producer and songwriter The-Dream, with six each, the Recording Academy announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The awards will be held on Feb. 5 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles (the former Staples Center) in what the academy is hoping will be its return to something like normal operating procedure after two years of delays and complications caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s nominations are in each of the three big all-genre categories \u2014 album of the year, plus record and song of the year for her single \u201cBreak My Soul\u201d \u2014 as well as in the dance\/electronic field and in R&B, where her tracks \u201cVirgo\u2019s Groove\u201d (R&B performance), \u201cPlastic Off the Sofa\u201d (traditional R&B performance) and \u201cCuff It\u201d (R&B song) were all recognized. She is also up for best song written for visual media for \u201cBe Alive,\u201d from the film \u201cKing Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those bring Beyonc\u00e9 to a career total of 88 nominations \u2014 tying Jay-Z, her husband, for the most received by any artist in the history of the awards. (Jay-Z, who had held the record with 83 nods, got five more this year, for contributions to \u201cRenaissance\u201d and DJ Khaled\u2019s \u201cGod Did.\u201d)<\/p>\n
If Beyonc\u00e9 takes three awards in February, she will match the classical conductor Georg Solti for the most Grammy wins by any artist. (She is already tied for second place in that race, with Quincy Jones.)<\/p>\n
Despite the shower of nominations Beyonc\u00e9 has received over the years, going back to her time in Destiny\u2019s Child two decades ago, she has won only once in any of the four most prestigious categories: as a credited songwriter of \u201cSingle Ladies (Put a Ring on It),\u201d which took song of the year in 2010. Every other victory has been in down-ballot genre fields.<\/p>\n
In what is sure to be one of the night\u2019s major story lines, Beyonc\u00e9 will once again face Adele in multiple contests, including album of the year (\u201cRenaissance\u201d vs. Adele\u2019s \u201c30\u201d) and both record and song of the year (\u201cBreak My Soul\u201d vs. \u201cEasy on Me\u201d).<\/p>\n
The two women, both titans of contemporary pop with ardent fan bases, last squared off at the 2017 Grammys. That year, Adele\u2019s \u201c25\u201d beat Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cLemonade\u201d in a closely watched contest for album of the year that fed into longtime complaints that the awards often fail to recognize Black musicians in the most prominent categories. Accepting the award, a tearful Adele said, \u201cI\u2019m very grateful and gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyonc\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s other nominees for album of the year include Lamar, for \u201cMr. Morale & the Big Steppers,\u201d his return after five years; Styles\u2019s \u201cHarry\u2019s House\u201d; Lizzo\u2019s \u201cSpecial\u201d; Carlile\u2019s \u201cIn These Silent Days\u201d; Mary J. Blige\u2019s \u201cGood Morning Gorgeous\u201d (in its \u201cdeluxe\u201d edition); Coldplay\u2019s \u201c of the Spheres\u201d; Abba\u2019s \u201cVoyage,\u201d the Swedish foursome\u2019s first new album in 40 years; and Bad Bunny\u2019s \u201cUn Verano Sin Ti.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUn Verano,\u201d a streaming blockbuster and the year\u2019s best-selling album so far, is the first release performed entirely in Spanish to be up for album of the year. Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican star, is the top nominee at the Latin Grammys on Thursday, with 10.<\/p>\n
For record of the year, which goes to the artists, producers and engineers behind a single track, \u201cBreak My Soul\u201d and \u201cEasy on Me\u201d will compete against Styles\u2019s \u201cAs It Was\u201d; Lizzo\u2019s \u201cAbout Damn Time\u201d; Doja Cat\u2019s \u201cWoman\u201d; Lamar\u2019s \u201cThe Heart Part 5\u201d; Carlile\u2019s \u201cYou and Me on the Rock,\u201d featuring Lucius; Abba\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Shut Me Down\u201d; Blige\u2019s \u201cGood Morning Gorgeous; and \u201cBad Habit,\u201d the breakout hit by the 24-year-old singer and guitarist Steve Lacy, who built his reputation as an innovator on the fringes of alternative R&B.<\/p>\n
\u201cBreak My Soul,\u201d \u201cEasy on Me,\u201d \u201cAs It Was,\u201d \u201cAbout Damn Time,\u201d \u201cBad Habit\u201d and \u201cThe Heart Part 5\u201d are also up for song of the year, a songwriters\u2019 award, along with Gayle\u2019s \u201cAbcdefu\u201d; Bonnie Raitt\u2019s \u201cJust Like That\u201d; DJ Khaled\u2019s \u201cGod Did\u201d; and Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cAll Too Well (10 Minute Version),\u201d an expansion of a track that originally appeared on Swift\u2019s 2012 album \u201cRed,\u201d which she rereleased as a fresh recording last years.<\/p>\n
