{"id":1248548,"date":"2022-11-11T00:14:52","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T00:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/11\/teachers-students-desert-classrooms-as-strike-continues-despite-nlc-directive\/"},"modified":"2022-11-11T00:14:52","modified_gmt":"2022-11-11T00:14:52","slug":"teachers-students-desert-classrooms-as-strike-continues-despite-nlc-directive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/11\/teachers-students-desert-classrooms-as-strike-continues-despite-nlc-directive\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers, students desert classrooms as strike continues despite NLC directive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The strike by teachers protesting the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service is adversely affecting academic activities in schools.<\/p>\n<p>The strike is still in force despite the National Labour Commission\u2019s directive to the teachers to end the strike.<\/p>\n<p>Some teachers and students have deserted classrooms in public basic and senior high schools in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.<\/p>\n<p>The three teacher unions have, since Friday 4th November 2022, been on strike to impress on the government to revoke the appointment of the new Director-General of Ghana Education Service.<\/p>\n<p>The three unions on strike are the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT).<\/p>\n<p>The absence of teachers in schools has compelled students to equally stay out of classrooms, as barely half of many schools\u2019 population were present in some areas <strong>Citi News<\/strong> visited.<\/p>\n<p>Some headmasters who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> on condition of anonymity expressed worry about the situation, indicating that it may only improve next week.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, the strike was heavily felt from Tuesday, when the attendance of students began dwindling due to the absence of many teachers.<\/p>\n<p>At Amakom Abrotia M\/A basic schools in Kumasi for instance, the headmaster for the school, Antwi Agyei-Frimpong told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> the situation there has not been any different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here and today is the same as yesterday\u2026 we are hoping the situation gets improved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"rtSu2wE-qws\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teachers&#039; strike bites hard in Ashanti Region as more members join in | CNR\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rtSu2wE-qws?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The strike by teachers protesting the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service is adversely affecting academic activities in schools.
