{"id":1246645,"date":"2022-11-08T15:01:33","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T15:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/08\/employment-ministry-runs-to-labour-commission-over-teachers-strike\/"},"modified":"2022-11-08T15:01:33","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T15:01:33","slug":"employment-ministry-runs-to-labour-commission-over-teachers-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/08\/employment-ministry-runs-to-labour-commission-over-teachers-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment Ministry runs to Labour Commission over teachers&#8217; strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations has referred the impasse between the government and the striking unions to the National Labour Commission.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after a second meeting between the parties involved on Monday to find a common ground ended in a stalemate.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher unions declared a sit-down strike on November 4, in protest of the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.<\/p>\n<p>They believe Dr. Nkansah does not have a satisfactory teaching background.<\/p>\n<p>The three unions on strike are the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT) have been on strike since November 4, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The strike has generally disrupted academic work at pre-tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> on the referral of the matter to the National Labour Commission, the Secretary for the GNAT, Thomas Musah said the gesture does not show good faith.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the development was unexpected because \u201cthe understanding social partners at the table had yesterday was that we would meet today at 2 pm to continue where we left off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the Ministry of Labour Relations to refer this matter to the National Labour Commission simply means they have declared a deadlock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Bi8DdFMW1zo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teachers in Kumasi divided over decision to embark on nationwide strike | Citi Newsroom\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bi8DdFMW1zo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations has referred the impasse between the government and the striking unions to the National Labour Commission.
