{"id":1246221,"date":"2022-11-08T05:51:16","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T05:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/08\/crime-rate-increasing-over-exchange-of-cocoa-farms-for-galamsey\/"},"modified":"2022-11-08T05:51:16","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T05:51:16","slug":"crime-rate-increasing-over-exchange-of-cocoa-farms-for-galamsey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/08\/crime-rate-increasing-over-exchange-of-cocoa-farms-for-galamsey\/","title":{"rendered":"Crime rate increasing over exchange of cocoa farms for galamsey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Residents of the Kwaebiberem Municipality in the Eastern Region have bemoaned the increasing cases of criminal activities following the destruction of farmlands by illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>The youth are said to be engaged in illegal acts because most of the town\u2019s cocoa farmlands have been sold by family members for illegal mining (galamsey) use.<\/p>\n<p>A visit by <strong>Citi News<\/strong> to the area revealed cocoa farms have been left with <strong>large pits<\/strong> by illegal small-scale miners.<\/p>\n<p>Residents said unknown persons came from outside the community to prospect and eventually destroy the land with their illegal mining activities.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the pits in the area had been left for up to eight years.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the government\u2019s rhetoric in the fight against illegal mining, illegal miners were still at work in this particular district.<\/p>\n<p>One of the residents who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> noted that the situation has become dire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most dangerous aspect. People have their cocoa farms, they sell them and after taking the money, that\u2019s all.
