{"id":1245791,"date":"2022-11-07T13:30:18","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T13:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/07\/debt-crisis-looming-in-2023-un-warns-ghana-and-other-african-countries\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T13:30:18","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T13:30:18","slug":"debt-crisis-looming-in-2023-un-warns-ghana-and-other-african-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/07\/debt-crisis-looming-in-2023-un-warns-ghana-and-other-african-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Debt crisis looming in 2023 &#8211; UN warns Ghana and other African countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\">\n<p>United Nations is predicting that Ghana together with some other African countries may not be able to pay up their public debts unless some drastic measures are taken to reform the global financial system.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent report released by the UNDP, Africa is facing a double crisis with the combined effects of the war in Ukraine and of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The document further stated that the continent may be caught up in the cycle of dependency unless some remedial measures are taken.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>Foreign Affairs <\/strong>on the <strong>JoyNews <\/strong>Channel, Charles Abani \u2013 UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana said the country must find ways of becoming more resilient.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come in the wake of predictions by global rating agency, Fitch, which says it sees more than 50% chance of Ghana defaulting on its debt repayment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"487\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Charles-Abani-Blessed-Sogah-1024x487.jpg\" alt=\"Debt crisis looming in 2023 - UN warns Ghana and other African countries\" class=\"wp-image-10032203799 lazy\"  data- title=\"Debt crisis looming in 2023 - UN warns Ghana and other African countries\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>According to the rating agency, the country\u2019s sovereign credit rating may face another downgrade closer to default, if talks with the International Monetary Fund for a $3 billion package lead to debt restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abani warned that Ghana and other African nations will face a debt crisis next year owing to default in payments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfricans need to learn how to become more resilient in the face of these challenges. I think Ghana\u2019s own ambition for self-reliance is a module that we all need to look at and in the aftermath of the pandemic, and again let us quote the President (Nana Akufo-Addo) we must not be caught with our pants down,\u201d he told host Blessed Sogah.<\/p>\n<p>He added that. \u201cthe Secretary-General and the UN has called for a number of systemic level responses. One is the need to reform the global financial Architecture that we work within.
