{"id":1243888,"date":"2022-11-04T14:18:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T14:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/meet-oscar-mawuli-ghanaian-artist-who-creates-awareness-about-breast-cancer-with-his-work\/"},"modified":"2022-11-04T14:18:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T14:18:00","slug":"meet-oscar-mawuli-ghanaian-artist-who-creates-awareness-about-breast-cancer-with-his-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/meet-oscar-mawuli-ghanaian-artist-who-creates-awareness-about-breast-cancer-with-his-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Oscar Mawuli, Ghanaian artist who creates awareness about breast cancer with his work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image-prod.iol.co.za\/16x9\/800?source=https:\/\/xlibris.public.prod.oc.inl.infomaker.io:8443\/opencontent\/objects\/c554931d-dd3e-560b-8cfd-4edde45088ed&amp;operation=CROP&amp;offset=0x121&amp;resize=720x405\" class=\"type:primaryImage\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Cape Town \u2013 Oscar Mawuli, is a 23-year old digital artist, painter, body artist and Youtuber from Accra in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to , Mawuli says his latest installation is his artistic expression that creates creating awareness about breast cancer by illustrating how breast health plays a vital role in nursing children as well as during sex.<\/p>\n<p>Mawuli is the owner of Yonga Arts based in Accra.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"baobab-embedded-image\" src=\"https:\/\/image-prod.iol.co.za\/resize\/650x65000?source=https:\/\/xlibris.public.prod.oc.inl.infomaker.io:8443\/opencontent\/objects\/a2e2589c-d864-5727-b9d6-80d8295d96b9\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"650\"\/><figcaption>Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI like to explore environments that encourage creative expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his latest piece he captures a woman, elegantly body painted and looking like a superhero ready to fight for the awareness of breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Mawuli says that this particular piece, resembles a superhero ready to take on one of Africa\u2019s most silent killers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one of the pieces, the lady can be seen levitating  with a rope attached to her breast, which is connected to the mouth of the male model kneeling before her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my way of expressing how powerful female breasts are, hence it\u2019s important to keep it healthy and go for regular check ups,\u201c he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mawuli says that art has always been around him since  early his childhood days.<\/p>\n<p>Mawuli doesn\u2019t shy away from tackling topics such as colonialism, Black Lives Matter and human rights. <\/p>\n<p>He has used his artwork to explore pre-colonial culture but also addresses decolonised practices in contemporary culture, the essence of the identity of black bodies, and seeks to ask searching questions about empowerment. <\/p>\n<p>Mawuli received his elementary education at Senajoy Preparatory School in Accra, after which he studied Visual Arts at Mawuli School in the Volta region.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently reading commercial arts in painting at Takoradi Technical University in Ghana. <\/p>\n<p>With 1.7 million women diagnosed each year, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, according to CANSA.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"ee8d868f8ac099878282878f839dae878082c08d81c0948f\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"strong-7c5aba2c98054305c7874a83378d0242\">Current Affairs <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cape Town \u2013 Oscar Mawuli, is a 23-year old digital artist, painter, body artist and Youtuber from Accra in Ghana.
