{"id":1243708,"date":"2022-11-04T11:37:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T11:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/mariah-careys-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-copyright-case-dropped\/"},"modified":"2022-11-04T11:37:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T11:37:54","slug":"mariah-careys-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-copyright-case-dropped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/mariah-careys-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-copyright-case-dropped\/","title":{"rendered":"Mariah Carey&#8217;s &#8216;All I Want For Christmas is You&#8217; copyright case dropped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/220604091303-mariah-carey-christmas-2019-file-exlarge-169.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\">\n<p>Singer Mariah Carey is no longer being sued for copyright infringement over her hit song All I Want for Christmas is You, after country singer Andy Stone dropped his legal action.<\/p>\n<p>Songwriter Mr Stone\u00a0<strong>sued the popstar in June<\/strong>, claiming he co-wrote a song with the same name five years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He told the court he would dismiss the case \u2013 but legally he could refile it.<\/p>\n<p>A must-have on any festive playlist, Carey\u2019s mega-hit is one of the best-known Christmas records of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stone, who performs under the name Vince Vance with the band Vince Vance and the Valiants, previously filed the lawsuit in a New Orleans federal court \u2013 where he also filed to have the case dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>He was claiming at least $20m (\u00a316m) in damages, arguing that Carey exploited his \u201cpopularity\u201d and \u201cstyle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite sharing a title, the two songs are musically different, but Mr Stone claimed that Carey did not ask for permission to use the song name and had earned \u201cundeserved profits\u201d from it.<\/p>\n<p>It is not unusual for different songs to have the same name, and the United States Copyright Office lists 177 entries on its website under the title All I Want for Christmas is You.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av-embeds\/63492412\/vpid\/p0916y4g\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since appearing on the album Merry Christmas in 1994, the song has topped the charts in several countries and by 2017 had reportedly earned Carey more than $60m (\u00a348m) in royalties.<\/p>\n<p>It has been streamed over one billion times on Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent memoir, Carey admitted to composing \u201cmost of the song on a cheap little Casio keyboard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISCLAIMER: <\/strong>The Views, Comments, Opinions, Contributions and Statements made by Readers and Contributors on this platform do not necessarily represent the views or policy of Multimedia Group Limited.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/mariah-careys-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-copyright-case-dropped\/\">Source<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Singer Mariah Carey is no longer being sued for copyright infringement over her hit song All I Want for Christmas is You, after country singer Andy Stone dropped his legal action.
