{"id":1243479,"date":"2022-11-04T08:20:09","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T08:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/i-went-out-with-a-homeless-man-and-didnt-know\/"},"modified":"2022-11-04T08:20:09","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T08:20:09","slug":"i-went-out-with-a-homeless-man-and-didnt-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/11\/04\/i-went-out-with-a-homeless-man-and-didnt-know\/","title":{"rendered":"I went out with a homeless man and didn\u2019t know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div wp_automatic_readability=\"167\">\n<p><figure><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The man isn\u2019t sure whether to tell his friend\u2019s partner (stock photo) (Image: Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>You know that famous scene from<em>\u00a0Forrest Gump,\u00a0<\/em>where Forrest tells the lady sitting next to him on the park bench how life is like a box of chocolates?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also file online dating under the category of, \u201c<em>You never know what you\u2019re gonna get.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was 23, single, and had just moved back to the big city after a stint of living at home with my parents on Long Island.<\/p>\n<p>I was living in a three-bedroom apartment with two roommates in Astoria.<\/p>\n<p>My old friend turned new roommate, Krystal, had met the guy she was dating on OKCupid.<\/p>\n<p>I know I\u2019m dating myself here but this was back before the\u00a0days of Tinder\u00a0when dating apps had yet to take over the digital dating scene and\u00a0free online dating sites\u00a0were few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>New in town and wanting to meet new people, I decided to give it a shot.<\/p>\n<p>I created a witty profile, uploaded a few pics, answered some obscure questions on things like math equations and creationism which were apparently supposed to help OKCupid find my dream man \u2026 and forgot all about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0What It Was Like Using The First Online Dating Service In The 1960s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Until one day, when a funny message from an OKCupid user Mike* caught my eye.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upon viewing his profile, I saw that he was also a fan of Bukowski, liked cats (a must), and worked as an editor, like myself.<\/p>\n<p>We exchanged a few messages back and forth and ended up setting a date for later that week.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>He chose a bar that I had frequented in my college days, due to the fact that this place serves $2.50 mixed drinks from 5-8 every day.<\/p>\n<p>As I headed over to meet him, I wondered if this was also the reason that he chose this spot.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, at that price I could afford to knock one back while waiting for him to show \u2014\u00a0and that\u2019s just what I did.<\/p>\n<p>I was halfway into my vodka soda when Mike appeared, carrying what looked like camping gear.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t exactly a tall guy and the load he was hauling with him made him look even more minuscule.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike his photos, he had the beginnings of a poorly trimmed beard happening and his hair was more unkempt than in the pictures on his profile.<\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe he was trying for some kind of hipster look?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We introduced ourselves, and Mike ordered (and quickly downed) a whiskey and ginger for himself without asking if I needed a refill (I did).<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0made small talk, which lead me to ask the standard, \u201cWhat do you do?\u201d question. When I did, I saw his expression go sour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to be an editor but they let me go recently,\u201d he told me. Mike went on to talk about the freelance articles he had been pitching to sites and said that he had had a few of his pieces picked up by various publications but that waiting for the freelance checks to arrive was taking forever.<\/p>\n<p>I let him rant about the pains of job searching (particularly in New York and especially when it comes to full-time paid work as an editor.)<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he asked me what I did and at that point, I really, really didn\u2019t want to tell him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work for Yahoo*,\u201d I said as quietly as I could, hoping that maybe he wouldn\u2019t catch the name of the company.<\/p>\n<p>This led to him asking probing questions\u00a0about how I\u2019d been hired there, if I knew anyone in HR, and if I could help him out by getting his resume in the right hands.<\/p>\n<p>I promised I\u2019d see what I could do then quickly\u00a0changed the subject, telling him I had just moved into a new apartment in Astoria with two new roommates.<\/p>\n<p>He asked me to describe the layout of my new pad \u2026 in detail.<\/p>\n<p>He was particularly interested in the new couch I had just bought and whether or not it was a pull-out, which I thought was pretty odd.<\/p>\n<p><em>Then came the kicker.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I asked Mike where he lived and with who.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He told me that he had been living in Brooklyn before he got laid off and since then he\u2019d been crashing on his friend\u2019s couches around the city.<\/p>\n<p>But last night, the guy whose couch he had been staying on for a while had apparently had enough of his freeloading.<\/p>\n<p>So last night, the night before our date, Mike had spent the night sleeping in Union Square Park.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to your parents for help in your 20s always feels like a failure but occasionally things get to a point where it\u2019s time to throw in the towel and head back to your parent\u2019s place (or somewhere more permanent than your buddy\u2019s couch) in order to regroup and figure out a way to get your life back on track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mike was definitely at the point where this needed to happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But unfortunately for Mike (and not to mention, for me and anyone else he\u2019d set dates up with that week), he hadn\u2019t come to terms with this yet.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I\u00a0thought things couldn\u2019t possibly get worse but as we were both heading out, Mike followed me to the subway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen,\u201d he said, \u201cI can tell you\u2019re not interested in dating me but is there any way you could ask your roommates if I could crash on your couch for a few nights?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I apologized, saying that I\u2019d only just started living there and that it wouldn\u2019t be appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>I wished him well and got on the train home.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea what became of Mike, or how many other OKCupid users he tried to convince to give up their couches for a few nights, but I really do hope that everything turned out okay for the guy.
